Two young girls with shoulder-length, dark hair wear Chinese, mandarin-style tunics in this nearly square black and white photograph. Both appear to have pale skin. They have short, rounded noses and dark eyes, and their lips are closed. One girl sits with her legs tucked under her on an upholstered armchair as she looks steadily out at us. The other, to our left, stands and leans onto one elbow, which is propped on the back of the chair. She reaches her other arm across her body to rest her hands near each other. Her hair falls in long, defined curls. She also wears a mandarin-style tunic and wide-legged pants. She rests one foot up on a block partially tucked under the chair, so her knees are together. She looks down and off to our right. Both tunics are decorated with long-necked birds and plants. The girls wear conical-shaped hats, each with a small white ball at the top. A wide parasol with closely spaced ribs is open behind the pair. The space behind them appears to be draped with cloth, and a plant in a pot sits to the left.
