American 20th Century

Associated Names
This painting shows an aerial view of a busy village scene. There are various visible structures, with a high horizon line above green hills separating the village from the blue and white sky. In the top left corner is a large yellow industrial building with a dark roof and tall chimneys emitting smoke above a canal crossed by an arched stone bridge in the center. Beyond the bridge are rolling hills with white houses and small animals grazing. Closer to us, people in bright clothing can be seen engaging in activities, riding in carriages, talking with one another, and walking. Many of them are lined up by a black train on the left side, with a woman partially visible in a pink compartment. Other people walk down a wide brown road to the right of center, and on the right people play and dance on a green lawn or pick flowers. The people are dressed in shades of yellow, green, pink, red, and blue, and they all appear to have light skin.
