Winslow Homer

Artist, American, 1836 - 1910

This painting shows a landscape with tall palm trees and bright green ferns by a body of water. In the background is a dense, dark forest in shades of black and dark blue. Closest to us, light blue water flows horizontally across the painting. In the bottom left corner, there is a long gray canoe that appears to have a person sitting in it, wearing red and holding a long white fishing line. The color palette includes shades of green for the trees and soft blue, white, and grey for the sky. The brushstrokes in the painting are loose and expressive, allowing colors to overlap and blend together.
