Winslow Homer

Artist, American, 1836 - 1910

This painting shows a densely wooded area with autumn foliage in shades of light and dark green, rusty orange, and yellow ochre among blue-gray trunks. A man dressed in brown tones and a hat stands looking off to the right, facing away from us. With him are two dogs with spots of white, brown, and black. The colors of the forest have been painted in fluid strokes and small dots, and they overlap with one another, creating depth.
