This painting displays an outdoor scene with a large tree to the left and a low horizon with a few buildings and what look like boats floating on blue water on the right. Closer to us on the right, several people are walking along a path towards us. One of them appears to be a woman in a brown dress with a yellow sash, carrying a basket on her head. The other two people appear to be adults with children, one adult wearing a blue dress and the other draped in a red cloak. The people have light brown skin. The sky above is light blue with fluffy white clouds The color palette includes greens, browns, and blues.

Commissioned by the Société des Amis des Arts de Douai through (Alfred Robaut); returned to the artist; (Hector Brame, Paris); Paul Gallimard [1850-1929], by 1900.[1] (Galerie Georges Petit, Paris);[2] purchased 18 February 1919 by (M. Knoedler and Co., New York); sold January 1920 to William A. Clark [1839-1925]; bequest 1926 to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; acquired 2014 by the National Gallery of Art.
