This horizontal painting shows a forest scene with several dark brown, gnarled trees. The ground beneath the trees is a mix of reddish-brown dirt and green grass, with some small green ferns. The trees have thick trunks, and several of them appear to grow diagonally rather than straight up. The tree closest to us, near the left side of the painting, has a large opening in its thick trunk, and several round knots. The trees all have small, feathery green leaves, creating a canopy at the top of the painting. The area closest to us appears to be in shadow, while a section of the background on the right side is illuminated with yellow light.
